Not a Hotel. Not an Airbnb. So What Actually Is Weston House? - Affordable Stay Keith

We get asked this a lot.
“So… is it like a hotel?”
“Is it like an Airbnb?”
“Is it like a hostel?”
Not a hotel and not an Airbnb — So what actually is Weston House?
And the honest answer is… not really. none of the above.
Weston House doesn’t sit neatly in any of those boxes. And that’s completely intentional.
When we first took over the building, we looked at the accommodation options in Keith and the wider Moray area. There were hotels. There were B&Bs. There were self-catering holiday lets. And all of them serve a purpose.
But none of them were really built for someone coming here to work for six weeks.
That’s the gap we stepped into.
Hotels are brilliant if you’re staying one or two nights. You check in, you sleep, maybe you have breakfast, and you leave. You don’t need storage. You don’t need routine. You don’t need to cook properly. It’s short and simple.
Airbnbs are great if you want a whole property for a weekend away. You want privacy, a lounge, maybe you’re here with family or friends. But they’re usually priced for tourism. And if you’re staying long-term, you’re often tied into fixed dates, cleaning fees, deposits, and sometimes awkward communication if something goes wrong.
Hostels? Not really suitable for contractors finishing a 12-hour shift who just want quiet and their own space.
So what is Weston House?
It’s somewhere in the middle. But designed specifically for real life.
Most of our guests are contractors working on energy or construction projects, NHS staff on placement at Dr Gray’s, students, or people relocating into the area. They’re not here for a break. They’re here because they have a job to do.
And when you’re here to work, what you need from accommodation is very different.
You need predictability.
You need to know what you’re paying each week and not watch a nightly rate fluctuate because it’s suddenly “high demand season.” You need bills included. You need Wi-Fi that works. You need a desk that’s actually usable.
You need somewhere you can cook properly. Not just heat something up. A proper kitchen. Storage space in the fridge. A place where you don’t feel like you’re in the way.
You need laundry access. Because living out of a suitcase for weeks isn’t realistic.
And most importantly, you need your own room. Your own door. Your own space to shut the world out after a long day.
That’s what Weston House is.
It’s 25 private rooms inside a former care home that we’ve been renovating room by room. When we first walked through the building, it was tired. Functional, yes. But outdated. Heavy furniture. Layouts that didn’t flow. It didn’t reflect how people live now.
So we started stripping it back.
We removed bulky pieces and replaced them with simple, functional furniture. Wall-mounted TVs to free up space. Proper desks because people work from their rooms sometimes. Our yellow accent chairs — which have somehow become a bit of a talking point — because we wanted warmth without clutter.
We kept things clean, neutral, calm. Tartan bedding as a nod to where we are, but fresh and modern rather than dated. We weren’t trying to create luxury. We were trying to create practicality done well. That’s the difference.
A hotel is designed for turnover. In and out. Clean, reset, repeat.
Weston House is designed for settling in.
We have guests who stay four weeks. Six weeks. Three months. Some extend because projects extend. Some come back when a new job starts. It’s not unusual for someone to say, “I stayed here last year when I was on the wind farm project.”
Another thing that makes us different is that we live on-site. This isn’t a faceless operation. If something goes wrong, we’re here. If someone needs help, we’re here. If there’s feedback, we hear it directly. That keeps standards high. It also keeps the atmosphere steady.
We have quiet hours. Not in a strict, clipboard way. But because when you’ve got people on early starts, night shifts, or long physical days, rest matters. A lot.
Airbnbs can sometimes feel isolated. You collect keys. You never meet anyone. You’re completely on your own. Hotels can feel impersonal. You’re just another booking reference.
Weston House sits in the middle. You’ve got your own space. Your own privacy. But you’re not alone in a strange town either.
There’s also the pricing model.
We offer nightly stays — £45 to £55 depending on the room type. But our long-term weekly rate is £200, capped to protect balance in the building. That weekly structure changes everything. It takes away the mental maths. It makes budgeting easier for individuals and for companies booking for teams. And because the model is built around longer stays, it works. It’s sustainable.
We don’t offer room service. We don’t offer a cocktail bar. We don’t offer spa treatments.
What we offer is something much more useful for our type of guest. Stability.
That might not sound exciting on paper. But if you’ve ever worked away from home for weeks at a time, you’ll know exactly how valuable that is.
Keith itself is in an interesting position. Close to energy projects. Close to distilleries. Within reach of Inverness and Aberdeen. But accommodation options haven’t always kept up with workforce demand. Traditional hospitality still leans towards tourism. We leaned towards workforce. And in doing that, we created something that doesn’t fit a neat label.
We’re not a hotel because we’re not built for overnight turnover.
We’re not an Airbnb because you’re not renting a whole property and managing it yourself.
We’re not a hostel because every guest has their own private room.
We’re serviced accommodation, but even that phrase can feel vague.
So maybe the simplest way to describe Weston House is this:It’s accommodation designed for real life. Real shifts.Real work.Real routines.Real budgets.
It’s somewhere you can come back to after a long day and actually exhale.
It’s somewhere you can cook your own food, wash your clothes, sit at a desk, and not feel like you’re camping indoors.
It’s somewhere that understands that living away from home isn’t just about having a bed.
It’s about having a base.
And that’s why people often say, after staying here, “This is exactly what I needed.”
Not glamorous.
Not flashy.
Just right.
If you’re coming to Moray for work and you’re trying to figure out whether you need a hotel, an Airbnb, or something else entirely, the real question is this:
How long are you staying?
If it’s more than a few nights, you probably don’t need a hotel.
You need somewhere built for living.
And that’s what Weston House is.
