Contractor Accommodation Moray: What to Know When Working on an Energy or Construction Project

If you’ve been told your next job is in Moray, there’s a good chance your first question is: where exactly am I going to stay? Is there contractor accommodation?

Moray has a growing amount of construction, infrastructure, renewable energy and utilities work taking place across the area. That brings engineers, tradespeople, site teams, project managers and contractors into the region for everything from a few days to several months at a time.

And if you’re going to be living away from home for weeks—or potentially months—the accommodation you choose can make a surprisingly big difference.

A hotel room can be perfectly fine for a couple of nights. Living out of one for eight, twelve or twenty weeks is a very different experience.

At Weston House in Keith, we accommodate people working across Moray throughout the year. Some stay for a few nights. Others stay for weeks or months, and we also accommodate companies requiring several rooms for project teams.

So, if work is bringing you to Moray, here are some of the things worth knowing before you arrive.

Where is Moray and where are the main areas for work?

Moray sits in the north-east of Scotland, between the Highlands and Aberdeenshire.

Elgin is the largest town in the area, but employment and construction projects are spread across a much wider region, including places such as Keith, Buckie, Forres and the surrounding rural areas.

Depending on the project, workers may also find themselves travelling towards Huntly, Aberdeenshire or further along the A96 corridor.

That makes location particularly important when choosing accommodation in Moray.

The closest accommodation to a site on a map isn't necessarily the most practical place to live for several months.

Think about where you'll be travelling each day, where you can buy food, whether there's somewhere to park your vehicle, and what facilities you'll need when you finish work.

Why Keith can be a useful base when working in Moray

Keith sits directly on the A96 between Aberdeen and Inverness, making it a practical base for people working across Moray and the surrounding area.

The town is also served by rail, with Keith railway station providing connections along the Aberdeen–Inverness route.

For somebody working away from home, though, the everyday things often matter just as much as transport links.

Keith has supermarkets and local shops, pubs, places to eat and takeaways, petrol stations and other everyday services within the town.

That means you can finish work and get what you need without necessarily having to travel into a larger town every evening.

At Weston House, we're also directly on the A96, which is particularly convenient for guests travelling to different sites throughout the area.

Many of the people who stay with us aren't actually working in Keith itself. They use Keith as their base and travel to wherever their project is taking place.

Think differently about accommodation if you're staying for several weeks

When you're booking somewhere for one or two nights, your priorities might be fairly simple.

A comfortable bed.

A shower.

WiFi.

Somewhere to park.

But once you're staying for several weeks, your needs change.

You start thinking about things such as:

Where am I going to cook?

Can I wash and dry my work clothes?

Is there somewhere other than my bedroom to sit in the evening?

Can I keep food somewhere?

Where can I park my van or car?

Will the accommodation be quiet enough when I need to sleep?

What happens if something goes wrong during my stay?

These are exactly the things worth asking before committing to long-term contractor accommodation.

Being able to cook makes a big difference - See our facilities

Eating in restaurants and ordering takeaways every night might sound appealing for the first few days.

After several weeks, it can become expensive—and most people simply want the option of making their own food.

If you're looking at accommodation for a longer contract, check what self-catering facilities are actually available.

Don't assume that "kitchen facilities" means a full kitchen suitable for everyday use.

At Weston House, we have a large shared self-catering kitchen and dining area where guests can prepare meals and store their food.

It's one of the facilities our longer-stay guests use most. For people working long shifts, having somewhere they can come back to and make whatever they want rather than relying on restaurant opening hours can make living away from home much easier.

Laundry facilities matter more than you'd think

Laundry isn't the most exciting part of choosing accommodation.

Until you're working away from home for eight weeks and need clean workwear. If you're comparing accommodation, check whether washing and drying facilities are available and whether there's an additional charge to use them.

Our laundry facilities at Weston House include washing machines and tumble dryers and are included for guests to use.

For a two-night stay, that might not influence your decision. For somebody staying Monday to Friday every week, or living in Moray for several months, it can be one of the most useful facilities in the building.

Check the parking situation before you book

If you're travelling to a construction, energy or infrastructure site, there's a good chance you'll be bringing a vehicle.

Some workers may have vans or larger work vehicles. Parking therefore needs to be part of the accommodation decision.

It's worth checking whether parking is available on-site, whether spaces are limited, whether larger vehicles can be accommodated and whether you're going to be searching for street parking after every shift.

Weston House has on-site parking for guests, and our location directly on the A96 makes it straightforward to get back onto the main road when travelling to and from work.

Private space still matters

Even when you're happy to share cooking and communal facilities, having your own private space can make a huge difference when you're living away from home.

After spending the day on site with other people, sometimes you just want to shut the door.

Weston House has 25 private double bedrooms, generally used for single occupancy. Guests can therefore have their own bedroom while sharing the larger kitchen, laundry and communal areas.

It's a model that works particularly well for contractors and project workers because it keeps accommodation more affordable while still giving each person their own space.

Look at the weekly cost—not just the nightly price - See our availability

This is particularly important for longer projects. Nightly accommodation prices can look reasonable until they're multiplied by seven nights, then four weeks, then several months.

If you know you're going to be in Moray for a while, ask whether a weekly or longer-stay rate is available.

We deliberately publish our weekly prices at Weston House because we think it makes life easier for guests and companies trying to work out accommodation costs.

Our current weekly rates are:

Standard Double Room – £200 per week

Comfort Double Room – £250 per week

Both are generally for single occupancy and include access to the shared facilities. It means someone looking at a three-month contract can work out their accommodation costs immediately rather than having to send an enquiry just to discover whether the property is within budget.

We'd much rather be transparent and let people decide whether Weston House suits what they're looking for.

If you're arranging accommodation for a team, ask different questions

Finding one room is relatively straightforward. Finding accommodation for six, eight, ten or more people for several weeks or months requires a bit more planning.

If you're responsible for arranging accommodation for a project team coming into Moray, it helps to establish:

  • How many people need accommodation?

  • Will everyone arrive and leave on the same dates?

  • Could the project be extended?

  • Will workers rotate during the project?

  • Does everyone require their own bedroom?

  • How many vehicles will the team have?

  • Do they need cooking and laundry facilities?

  • How will invoicing and payment be handled?

  • Is there someone locally who can deal with problems during the stay?

The earlier you have this information, the easier arranging accommodation becomes.

Projects change. Start dates move. Contracts are extended. Different people replace members of the original team. That's normal. The important thing is having a conversation with the accommodation provider early enough that there are options available.

Keeping a team together can make things easier

Another consideration for companies is whether workers will be spread between several hotels, holiday lets and towns. Sometimes that's unavoidable. But where possible, keeping a project team in one location can make the logistics considerably simpler.

Weston House has 25 bedrooms in one managed building, which means we can accommodate individual contractors but can also work with companies requiring multiple rooms. For the company organising the stay, that can mean fewer accommodation providers to deal with, a consistent set of facilities and one point of contact. For the workers, it means colleagues can be based in the same place while everyone still has their own private bedroom.

Don't leave accommodation until the last minute

This is probably one of the biggest pieces of advice we can give companies bringing workers into the area. Accommodation sometimes becomes the final item on the project checklist.

The contract has been awarded.

The workers have been selected.

Vehicles have been organised.

The start date is confirmed.

And then someone realises that eight people need somewhere to live from Monday.

Sometimes it works.

Sometimes it doesn't.

Availability across Moray can change significantly depending on the time of year, local events, tourism demand and the number of projects operating in the area.

If you know that workers are likely to be coming to Moray—even if the dates aren't completely confirmed yet—it's worth starting the accommodation conversation.

You don't necessarily need every detail. An approximate start date, expected duration and likely number of workers is enough to begin looking at the options.

On-site management can be particularly useful for longer stays

Problems occasionally happen in any accommodation.

A washing machine stops working.

Someone loses a key.

Something needs repaired.

A guest has a question.

For someone staying one night, that might not matter much.

For somebody effectively living somewhere for three months, it does.

Weston House has on site management, which means there is someone here who knows the building and can deal with issues when they arise. Our communal areas are also cleaned regularly. For us, serviced accommodation isn't simply about providing a bedroom. It's about making longer stays practical and manageable for the people actually living here.

What should you bring when working away from home?

This obviously depends on your job and how long you'll be staying, but there are a few things worth checking before filling the car. Ask your accommodation provider what is already supplied. If you're staying somewhere with proper cooking and laundry facilities, you may need considerably less than you think. For longer stays, it's also worth bringing some of the small things that make your room feel more comfortable. And don't forget that you're not moving permanently. One of the advantages of serviced accommodation is being able to arrive somewhere that's already set up for you.

What if your project dates change?

If you've worked in construction, engineering or energy for any length of time, you probably already know the answer to this one:

Project dates change.

Work gets delayed.

Another phase starts sooner than expected.

A contract that's supposed to last six weeks becomes twelve.

Or someone is needed on another site.

If you're arranging accommodation, tell the provider as soon as you know things may change. We regularly accommodate longer stays at Weston House and understand that project schedules don't always stay exactly as originally planned.

We can't guarantee that rooms will always be available for an extension, particularly during busy periods, but the earlier we know, the easier it is to look at the options.

What if Weston House doesn't have enough rooms?

Ask us anyway.

This is something we're increasingly passionate about.

Weston House only has 25 bedrooms.

There will be times when we're full, when we don't have enough rooms together, or when what someone needs simply isn't what we provide.

Rather than just saying no, we're building relationships with other accommodation providers around the area so that, where possible, we can point people in the right direction.

Moray has a wide range of accommodation, and different properties suit different people.

We don't need every person coming to Moray to stay at Weston House.

We'd rather help people find accommodation that actually works for them.
